Updated look at expected snow totals by region

A winter storm is expected to bring up to 10 inches of snow to parts of Michigan on Tuesday.

The messy winter storm is expected to start early Tuesday and last into Wednesday, bringing a mix of snow, rain and gusty winds — but how much show depends on where you live in Michigan. The rain/snow line could change, which will impact snow totals. Here’s a roundup of expected snow in each region of the state.

Snow in Metro Detroit

We’ll be seeing the least amount of snow in this system for any region in the state, but it’s still be disruptive.

Here’s the latest update from 4Warn Weather’s Kim Adams: A Winter Weather Advisory in effect from 4am-11am for all of Southeast Lower Michigan. Overnight a wet heavy snow develops with a low around 34 degrees.

Morning commute will be slushy with wet snow changing over to all rain by the lunch hour. Highs will climb into the low 40s by the afternoon hours. Winds will gust over 30mph at times. Heavy rain and street flooding will likely be an issue for the evening commute.

A clipper system comes through on Thursday bringing with it another chance for scattered snow showers. Then perhaps the biggest storm of the winter comes Friday night into Saturday.

Snow in West Michigan

Here’s the forecast from the NWS in Grand Rapids: “Accumulating snow arrives early Tuesday morning and is expected to impact the morning commute. A very wet and dense snowfall is forecast, with 1″-4″ region wide through late Tuesday morning. An additional 2″-5″ of snow is expected near and north of M-20 Tuesday afternoon, while areas south of M-20 will mix with or changeover completely to rain, making for sloppy conditions. All areas turn back over to light snow Wednesday morning but minimal accumulations of an inch or less are forecast. Although gusty winds of 25-35 mph are forecast at times with this storm, given how wet the snow is we are not looking at blowing snow (the type that gets lofted off the ground) being a problem.”

Snow in Lower Northern Michigan

A winter storm watch has been issued for most of the upper half of Lower Michigan, with 6-11 inches of snow forecasted for parts of the area. A winter storm warning was issued for areas in Northern Michigan including: Petoskey, Cheboygan, Paradise, Trout Lake, Rudyard, Sault Ste. Marie, Brimley, Kinross, Sugar Island, Detour Village, Goetzville, Drummond Island, Engadine, Naubinway, Epoufette, St. Ignace, Brevort, Les Cheneaux Islands, and Mackinac Island.

Here’s what NWS from Gaylord said: “A potent winter storm will bring gusty winds and accumulating wet, dense snow to the region Tuesday into Tuesday night. Still expecting some rain to mix in near Saginaw Bay Tuesday afternoon and evening, depending on the track of the system, though there is still some uncertainty in how far north this will mix in. Plan for slow travel and isolated power outages.”

Snow in the Michigan Upper Peninsula

Here’s the forecast from NWS in Marquette: A light wintry mix of snow and freezing drizzle develops this evening then transitions to accumulating snow late Monday night. The heaviest snow is not expected until Tuesday evening when increasing north winds may result in a few power outages.

Parts of the Upper Peninsula are under a winter storm warning, with 6-10 inches expected on parts of the UP.
